ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I make marks on clay, canvas or paper that denote a position in space or on form relative to other marks and the edges of the material that I am working with. The relationship between the colors, marks, darks and lights, edges and volumes form my visual language.
In this restructured time space, the mind watches, the hand moves and the heart is given over to the moment. The outer appearance drops away and a harmony is revealed within the image that contains the essence of the object. The body and the land that are doorways to this process. My part in the process of making art is to stay open, alert, listening and responsive. Marks are released until they fall into an image that is irrevocably right, whole and imbued with a distinctive presence.
Working with the apparent chaos of the world, the tensions inherent in its duality create an object whose expression comes from the force of the whole image. The process is exciting, the outcome unpredictable, the mind empty as the body dances to the present moment in its timeless glory. This is the moment that destroys the traces of what has gone before and what is yet to come.
To be an artist is to look intently within with a conscious sense of unknowing and a willingness to risk all in pursuit of ones goal. For me, art has to speak of the Ultimate. Sensations and perceptions synthesize into form given life by seeking to express the truth through seeing and living in the world.
